Tarot Cards

This Tarot Card Box has two compartments, empty but of a size to hold decks of cards like those shown, one affixed to each of the lids (which open in opposite directions). (The cards may or may not have been a full tarot deck [i.e. including the Major Arcana] the two sets possibly indicating their use for gaming.)

The box is wood, covered with gesso, and has simple, wire-staple type hinges. Exterior surface has been painted, gilded, and decorated with intaglio filigree designs. About 3-1/2" x 10-3/8" x 1-7/8" high overall. Cards (about 2½" x 4¼") are illustrated with chromoxylographs (color wood engravings) having text in Italian (e.g., "Dama di Coppe or "Queen of Cups").
