Fortune telling has persisted since ancient times, with divination being effected by numerous means, including astrology, tea-leaf reading, scrying (see under Crystal Ball), palmistry, and many other techniques.

This display consists of a postcard (left), "The Fortune Teller"; a deck of Gypsy Witch fortune telling cards; the Firelite Fortune Teller kit (featuring stickers to be posted onto ordinary playing cards to convert the pack into fortunetelling cards); and a 1926 booklet, All the World Fortune Teller, containing information on divination (by cards, dominoes, dice, palmistry, tea leaves, etc.), character reading (by facial chracteristics and handwriting), charms, and other topics.

At center foreground is a deck of tarot cards. Divination by the tarot— a special set of fortunetelling cards— is centuries old. A tarot deck consists of 78 cards, divided into the major arcana (22 cards that represent stages in a person's progress through life) and the minor arcana (56 cards divided into four suits: cups, swords, wands, and pentacles).
