Various amulets (charms) and talismans (amulets engraved with characters that have magical significance) are used to ward off evil influence and bring good fortune.
Religious symbols may be just that, but if they are used in a belief that they are embued with special protective powers then they become objects of superstitious practice. Shown here are protective amulets associated with travel, including (top) a "Guardian Angel of the Road" (copyright 1995 by Roman, Inc.), a Muslim prayer card (once used in a New York City taxi cab), and a Catholic clip-on device, embossed with religious figures and text: "Saint Christopher Be My Guide" and "Our Lady of the Highway Pray for Us."
